MLaw Programs thrives on a vibrant and creative collaboration between the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.  As part of this collaboration, MLaw Programs regularly hosts and co-hosts a series of discussions and networking events throughout the year.  These events generally feature a panel of distinguished scholars in the field of justice and legal thought.

October 2020:

  • Black Law Student Panel | Thursday, October 29th at 6pm | The Black Pre-Law Association will be hosting a black law student panel.  The panel will feature law students from Howard Law, George Washington Law School, UMD Carey School of Law, and Georgetown Law who will be answering our questions and giving us all the ins and outs of their experiences.
  • The Jury Speaks Watch Party # 3 - Robert Blake | Friday, October 30th from 4:00 - 5:30 pm EST | Join the Associate Director of Justice and Legal Thought, Erica Smith, for MLaw’s third “The Jury Speaks” watch party of the semester.  “The Jury Speaks” reexamines some of the most high-profile and controversial cases in history through the eyes of the people who served on the original jury.  In 2005, a jury found Hollywood legend, Robert Blake not guilty of murder after his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley, was found shot execution style.

November 2020:

  • Health is a Human Right: Social Justice in the Era of a Double Pandemic | Wednesday, November 11th from 5:00 - 6:30 pm EST | Global Public Health (GPH) and Justice and Legal Thought (JLT) Scholars programs will be hosting a panel discussion on Health is a Human Right: Social Justice in the Era of a Double Pandemic.  Panelists Jennifer D. Roberts, PhD, Kevin Roy, PhD, and EJ Flynn, JD, will discuss their research and address racial inequalities, social movements, and health.
  • The Jury Speaks Watch Party # 4 - George Zimmerman | Friday, November 13th from 4:00 - 5:30 pm ESTJoin the Associate Director of Justice and Legal Thought, Erica Smith, for MLaw’s fourth “The Jury Speaks” watch party of the semester.  “The Jury Speaks” reexamines some of the most high-profile and controversial cases in history through the eyes of the people who served on the original jury.  The case that infamously sparked the Black Lives Matter movement.  Zimmerman was found not guilty for the murder of unarmed teen, Trayvon Martin.
  • The Jury Speaks Watch Party # 5 - Robert Durst | Friday, November 20th from 4:00 - 5:30 pm ESTJoin the Associate Director of Justice and Legal Thought, Erica Smith, for MLaw’s fifth and final “The Jury Speaks” watch party of the semester.  “The Jury Speaks” reexamines some of the most high-profile and controversial cases in history through the eyes of the people who served on the original jury.  In 2015, Durst was caught on tape professing, “I killed them all.”  We sit down with jurors who found the now-confessed killer not guilty of murder in 2003, and examine the possibility of a misled jury, and the outcome of their revote.
