Maartje van der Woude is Full Professor of Socio-Legal Studies at the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Development and Associate Professor at the Institute for Criminal Law & Criminology. Both institutes are part of Leiden Law School, the Netherlands. Besides her academic career, Van der Woude is also a deputy judge at the Criminal Court of Northern-Netherlands. Before coming to the University of  Maryland as a visiting professor in the MLAW Programs this spring, she has been a visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of Law and Society in Berkeley (2008) and a visiting professor at Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco (2014). Van der Woude is one of the current organizers of the Law & Society Association’s Collaborative Research Network on Citizenship & Immigration and an active board member of the Crimmigration Control International Net of Studies (CINETS). Her research focuses on the convergence of crime control and immigration control, also known as the process of crimmigration. Van der Woude has published several international articles on the process of crimmigration in the Netherlands. In her current research project “Decision-making in Borderlands”, together with her two PhD students, she examines the complex legal landscape of internal border control in the European Union. By drawing on the literature on discretion, mobility, borders, decision-making and street-level bureaucracy, Van der Woude aims to shed light on the complex chain of supranational, national, organizational and individual decision-making governing and affecting the outcomes of (cr)immigration checks carried out in EU border areas.
